Mervue Utd Weekly Round Up

Junior A

The club's Junior team advanced to the quarter final of the Connacht Junior Cup after a hard earned 2-1 win over a battling Ballyheane FC side at a very wet Fahy's Field last Sunday afternoon as all the goals came in the opening half. Two first half goals from the returning Eoin Concannon, a good finish and a header on nine and 45 minutes, were enough in the end to send Ger McGrath's side through to the last eight. That win has seen them handed another home draw in the last eight as they will host another Mayo side, Iorrais Aontaithe, at Fahy's Field in two weeks time. McGrath’s side return to league action for another important league game this weekend as they host St Bernards in the Premier Division for the first time this season at Fahy’s Field on Sunday morning at 11 am.

Aaron Connolly hit a hat-trick and Ronan Manning struck twice as Ollie Neary’s side reached the last four. They followed that cup win with a league win on Thursday night defeating Barna/Furbo 3-1 with wo goals from Aaron Molloy and another from Josh Quinlivan ensured all three points in Furbo.

The club’s U-16 B team moved to the top of the table with a hard fought 1-0 win away to league leaders Ramblers last Sunday afternoon. Top scorer Jayden O'Malley scored the only goal of the game from a Dems Henok cross to secure all three important points.

Airtricity League U-19

The club’s Airtricity U-19 team finished off their season with a 3-1 away defeat in Tallaght Stadium as they lost out to Shamrock Rovers last Saturday afternoon. Despite taking a half time lead through Darren Murray’s penalty after Yousef Mahdy had been taken down in the box, the home side struck three second half goals without reply.

Patrick Hoban/Ryan Manning

It was another good past week for former club stars as Patrick Hoban scored his first goal in English soccer for Oxford Utd last Saturday afternoon as he headed home a trademark header to level matters against Carlisle Utd. Congratulations to Patrick the first of many no doubt for the talented striker. Ryan Manning also hit the headlines as he scored for the Irish U-19 side as they came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Slovakia in the UEFA U-19 Championships Elite Phase in Mannheim, Germany on Tuesday.
