Juniors into Connacht Cup Quarter Final   30/03/2015

Mervue Utd 2-1 Ballyheane FC
Connacht Junior Cup 5th Round (Last Sixteen)

The club's Junior team advanced to the quarter final of the Connacht Junior Cup after a 2-1 win over a battling Ballyheane FC side at a very wet Fahy's Field on Sunday afternoon.

The home side got of to the perfect start after just nine minutes as Eoin Concannon finished a Simon Walsh ball past Ballyheane goalkeeper Sean Fahy to open the scoring.

Just three minutes later and the visitors were level as some poor defending allowed Andrew Shally cross for Arek Tobias to lob the ball over John Egan and the covering Tommy Walsh into the net for 1-1.

The home side dominated possession after that and despite forcing the pace they never really threaten the Ballyheane goal and when they did they found keeper Fahy in good form as he denied Steve Cunningham, Steve Larkin and Barry Moran.

The home side did get back in front on the stroke of half time as Concannon headed home Aaron Finnerty's cross from the right at the back post to send Mervue 2-1 in front at the break.

They continued to dominant the second period but failed to add to Conncannon's two opening half goals as Barry Moran's free-kick which came crashing back of the crossbar was the closest they came to doubling their lead.

Ger McGrath's team have been handed another home draw in the last eight as they will host another Mayo side, Iorrais Aontaithe, at Fahy's Field in three weeks time.
