Youth Team Claim Treble Success   23/05/2013

Mervue Utd A 1-0 Hibs/Foyle (U18 GFA Cup Final)

The club's Youth team completed the treble on Thursday evening as they added the GFA Cup to the GDL League title and Connacht Youth Cup after an extra time 1-0 win over Hibs/Foyle in Eamonn Deacy Park in a very sporting and tight game which could have gone either way as both sides created several good chances to win it.

In the end after a scoreless normal 90 minutes were good goalkeeping from Mervue captain James Healy and Hibs Darren Sinton ensured extra time, where it came down to a penalty scored by Richard Fahy which ultimately secured the cup final win and a excellent treble for Justin Neary and Colin Nolan's squad.

Mervue fielded without Eric Neary, John Rattigan, Padraic Cunningham and Ryan Manning but still started brightly as Moise Assogba shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box after five minutes.

On 10 minutes a great move down the left saw Gary Bailey and Moise Assogba combine with Aaron McDonagh and his dangerous cross into the box picked out Chris Carroll who shot over from a great position. Hibs broke quickly and at the other end Mikey Fox almost opened the scoring against his former club but his effort struck the post.

Aaron McDonagh cut through the Hibs defence on 22 minutes with another excellent run but Sinton denied him with a good save, while just seven minutes before the break another dangerous McDonagh cross from the right failed to be finished to the net by Richie Fahy or Chris Carroll as both couldn't get a proper touch on the delivery.

Ten minutes after the break James Healy kept the game scoreless after a good move down the left by Hibs saw the captain push the Hibs left back Enda Fallon's well struck shot away for a corner.

John Miguel picked out Dillon Murphy but he couldn't get a good enough strike on the ball in front of goals as Sinton gathered on 73 minutes. John Miguel created another shooting opportunity for Richie Fahy but his effort was well saved by Sinton at the expense of a corner with two minutes remaining.

From the corner Aaron McDonagh delivered another dangerous ball which fell to Paul Healy but his effort from six yards was brilliantly clawed away by Sinton once again to force the game into extra time.

The only goal of the game arrived six minutes into the first half of extra time as Mervue were awarded a penalty. A good run from James Nolan saw him through on goals but his shot was deflected across the face of goals and as Dillon Murphy attempted to claim the loose ball he was bundled over in the box with ref Ger Cahill pointing to the spot.

Richie Fahy stepped up and confidently dispatched the spot kick past Sinton for the winning score. Sinton prevented Aaron McDonagh doubling the lead as the winger weaved his way into the box but the keeper saved with his legs on 104 minutes.

Hibs then went close to levelling matters and sending the game to penalties as Martin O'Connor's well struck shot cannoned off the crossbar a minute later, while James Healy played his captain's part as he denied Dean Tierney and Enda Fallon with two excellent saves in the closing minutes of extra time to ensure a historic treble for the club.

After the game Galway FA Chairman Joe Keating presented the GFA Cup to winning captain James Healy who complimented a Hibs/Foyle side who put it up to Justin Neary and Colin Nolan's side all season running them close in both league and cup.
