Junior A's Win in Bohermore   15/04/2013

Galway Hibs 1-2 Mervue Utd A (Premier Division)

The club's Junior A team secured another valuable three points to move six points clear at the top of the Premier Division as they defeated Galway Hibs in Bohermore on Sunday morning.

First half goals from Tommy Walsh and Stephen Cunningham were enough despite a late Keith Ward free-kick for the home side as Gary O'Connor and Ger McGrath's side recorded league win number 12.

Mervue opened the scoring on 22 minutes when Tommy Walsh received a pass just outside the box after good passing play from Mervue and he fired a smashing low effort into the bottom corner past John Cotter.

The home side could have been in front prior to that as Ollie Keogh was through on goals and despite firing past an advancing Brian O'Donoghue his effort crashed back of the post as Mervue received a let off.

Steve Cunningham should have opened the scoring after that as he ran onto a Walsh ball but Cotter advanced to block his poor effort before Walsh made it 1-0. Cunningham raced through again after the opening score but Cotter advanced smartly to pluck the ball from the strikers feet on the edge of the box.

On 36 minutes Cunningham wasn't to be denied as he finished the ball to the net following Tommy Walsh's corner kick which Dara Ryan flicked on to the striker to make it 2-0.

Cunningham had another effort deflected away for a corner on the hour mark in a second half of very few chances. The home side pull a goal back on 75 minutes as Keith Ward fired a cracking free-kick over the wall and into the top corner giving O'Donoghue no chance.

Cotter denied sub Stephen Larkin late on as he threatened to make it 3-1 but the keeper was alert to race from his line and block the effort. With second place Corrib Rangers losing out to NUIG O'Connor and McGrath's side increased their lead to six points with four tough games remaining.

Mervue Utd: O'Donoghue, Browne, Dowling, O'Connor, McHugh (Connolly 76); Finnerty, McWalter, Walsh, Meaney (Dillon 68); Ryan, Cunningham.
