Injury Time Heatbreak for U17's   30/03/2013

Mervue Utd 0-1 St Kevins Boys (FAI Umbro Cup Semi Final)

The club's under 17 side suffered heartbreak in the FAI Umbro Cup semi-final as the current holders St Kevins Boys claimed a dramatic 92nd minute winner to send them into the national decider at Fahy's Field on Saturday evening.

In what was a tight game throughout the Dublin side played some quality football without ever creating the amount of chances their play look like doing as Robert Carroll was outstanding at the back for the home side until he had to retire injured with four minutes remaining.

Mervue could easily have been in front in the final minute before the visitors scored the only goal of the game in injury time, as Padraic Cunningham headed a glorious chance over the Kevins Boys crossbar.

Ryan Manning forced an early save from Tipperary native Jack Brady as the keeper got down low to save his on target free-kick after Antoine O'Laoi had been hauled down 25 yards out. Kevins Boys winger Stephen Confrey struck the crossbar on 28 minutes as his shot from distance almost broke the deadlock with Aaron Ashe firing the loose ball wide.

Just past the half hour mark the excellent left back Jason Caffrey caused problems with one of his many intelligent runs before Paul Healy deflected his dangerous cross over the crossbar for a corner. Five minutes from the break Ashe saw his header from a Confrey right wing cross blocked by Carroll as the half ended scoreless.

Carroll was on hand again a minute after the break as he cleared an Evan Shine shot off the line before right back Jordan O'Reilly's run found the number nine again but he flicked his near post effort into the side netting on 47 minutes.

Mervue's Irish U16 international Connor Melody had the ball in the net on 55 minutes as he finished Carroll's freekick past Brady but the offside flag ruled that effort out. A stray back pass on 63 minutes allow Shine in on goals but although he rounded the advancing Peter Healy covering defender Carroll was on hand again to block the ball away for a corner at the near post.

A minute later and a Gregory Sloggitt ball found Confrey free on the right of the box but Healy advanced and brilliantly spread himself to save at the winger's feet. At the other end Melody cut in from the right wing and flashed an effort just past Brady's post.

Defender Carroll almost caught out Kevins Boys keeper Brady with a long range effort which dropped just over the visitor's crossbar with nine minutes left. Carroll then suffered an 86th minute injury and had to be replaced by Eoghan Kelly with Moise Assogba dropping back to centre half.

With time running out and extra time looking certain the home side almost struck for a late winner as Cunningham somehow headed Antoine O'Laoi's cross over with the goal at his mercy.

The visitors did claim that late late winner as two minutes into injury time the home side conceded a free-kick on the right and Caffrey's delivery was powerfully headed home by centre half Sean Meaney giving Peter Healy no chance as no extra time was required in the end.
