Connacht Cup Treble for Club Sides   03/05/2017

Connacht Cup Treble

It was an historic weekend for Mervue Utd as the club’s underage teams captured a treble of Provincial titles as the U-12, U-14 and U-16 squads all won their Connacht Cup finals in Milebush, Castlebar last Saturday and Sunday.

The U-16 team kicked it all off on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Sligo side, Strand Celtic, 4-1 in their final. Colin Kelly put them ahead with two first half goals for a 2-0 half time lead before Adam Farrell added a third five minutes after the restart. The Sligo side did pull a goal back to make it 3-1 but Ethan Fiorentini scored a fourth goal to ensure victory. Well done to Coley Kelly and Damien Brennan’s team who were retaining the title for a second year in a row for the club.

The U-12 team were involved in a much tighter Connacht Cup final on Sunday as they came out on top with 1-0 win over Manulla FC after a very entertaining and excellent game of football played by both sides. Striker James Lukua scored what proved to be the only goal of the game in the opening half despite both sides creating plenty of chances in either half. Well done to Gary O’Connor and Brian Laffey’s young squad who were winning the cup for the third time in four years for the club.

With both the U-12 and U-16 teams winning, the pressure was on the club’s U-14 squad to deliver a third title as they faced Athlone side St Francis on Sunday afternoon. Eric Connolly and Seamie Rabbitte’s side put in a very professional performance as they completed the treble of provincial titles for the weekend winning 3-1. Sam O’Neill opened the scoring after 19 minutes against a big and physical St Francis side who levelled matters through Neil Kenny just after the break. Mervue sub Darragh O’Malley put in a man of the match performance in the second half as he scored twice to ensure another provincial title. Well done to Eric Connolly and Seamie Rabbitte’s young squad who were also winning the cup for the third time in four years for the club.
