Connacht Junior Cup/SFAI Cup Semi-Finals
A very busy weekend ahead for Mervue Utd teams as no less
than twelve club sides are due to play games over the next two days. The
two big games of the weekend for the club involve the Junior A team in Connacht Junior Cup
semi-final action, while the U15’s are in national cup semi-final action.
The Junior A team have a very tough away last four Connacht Junior Cup game against Ballinasloe Town on Sunday afternoon with kick-off at 2 pm at the Curragh
Grounds. Ger McGrath and Mike Shaughnessy’s side will be hoping they can
advance to a second successive provincial final and retain the title won last
May in Eamonn Deacy Park. They warmed up for that game with a 1-1 draw with Colemanstown Utd at
Fahy’s Field last Sunday morning. Simon Walsh continued his recent good scoring
form as he put the home side in front with ten minutes remaining and that
looked to have secured the three points, but the concession of a late penalty
allowed the visitors claim a share of the points.
The U-15 side also have a very tough away game in their last four SFAI Cup game as
they travel to Athlone Town Stadium on Saturday evening to face Athlone
Town with kick-off at 5.45 pm. Coley Kelly and Pa O’Connell’s side go into the
game on the back of a winning run and last Saturday defeated Cregmore/Claregalway 1-0 in
the Premier Division courtesy of a Harry O’Gorman goal. Both goalkeeper, Sam O'Gorman, and defender Hakeem Ryan made their international debuts during the week for the Ireland U-15 team in their 3-1 win over the Czech Republic.
All support for both teams this weekend would be greatly
appreciated by the club.
