Mervue United Team News v Longford Town

Friday 25th October 2013, City Calling Stadium (Kick-off 7.45 p.m.)

Mervue Utd make the short trip to the midlands on Friday night in the second leg of the Airtricity League First Division Play-off knowing if they can avoid defeat against Longford Town another two legged tie awaits against the 11th placed Premier Division side, kick-off 7.45 p.m.

Johnny Glynn’s side will carry a one goal advantage into the game after a cracking strike from Jason Molloy gave the home side a 1-0 win in last week’s first leg at Fahy’s Field. Despite dominating the play for long periods, particularly in the opening half, only that Molloy goal separates the sides in what is sure to be another tight affair at the City Calling Stadium.

Last week’s win also continued Mervue’s hot end of season form as the club have now won their last seven games and conceded only once as the defence has recorded six clear sheets in that amazing run. Mervue have also won the last three meetings with Longford and recorded an impressive 3-1 win at the City Calling Stadium back in July when two goals from Gary Shanahan and another from Stephen Walsh saw them overturn an early David O’Sullivan goal.

Defender Martin Conneely should return having failed a late fitness test before last week’s first leg but he has trained all week, while midfielders Gary Curran (ribs) and Gary Kelly (groin) are doubtful having picked up injuries playing for their colleges in mid-week.

Glynn on Friday’s game “We played really well again last week and take a narrow advantage into the second leg but it’s only half time in the tie and Longford showed in the second half that they are still in this tie and capable of turning it around. It’s going to be another tough game and we will have to play as well as we have recently to get a result as Longford will be eager to advance in front of a big home crowd on Friday night.”
