Team News Ahead of Athlone Game 2013-06-27 15:36:00

Mervue United Team News v Athlone Town

Friday 28th June 2013, Athlone Town Stadium (Kick-off 7.45 p.m.)

Mervue Utd return to action after the mid-season break with  a trip up the M6 to face second placed Athlone Town on Friday evening with kick-off at 7.45 p.m.

Johnny Glynn's side will be hoping to return to winning ways as they begin series three in the league having suffered a 2-0 defeat in their final game of series two away to Wexford Youths prior to the break.

Both games this season between the sides have proven to be very even affairs with the opening game of the season back in March producing a scoreless draw, while the first game of Series 2 also ended all square after a 2-2 draw with Roddy Collins side lucky to escape Fahy's Field with a point courtesy of a 93rd minute penalty awarded in controversial circumstances.

Glynn will have to plan without defender Stephen Walsh who is suspended for the game following his dismissal in Wexford but otherwise he has a full squad to choose from for the game.

Glynn on Friday's game "The last time we played Athlone we were denied the win after the referee made a huge mistake in awarding them an injury time penalty which the video evidence proved. We have played them twice and drew both games and they are a decent side who are on a good run of form at the moment. It will be another big challenge for us but one the lads are looking forward to especially after the break."

Athlone Town secured two massive wins in terms of both confidence and league position against Longford Town and Finn Harps prior to the mid season break and will be looking to make it three wins from three games.

Since 2009 the teams have played 15 times in all competitions with the games producing 33 goals in total averaging at just over 2 goals per game. In these 15 games there have only been three draws with two of them happening this season.

Roddy Collins side heads into this game without any suspensions or injuries as players have a last chance to impress before the mid season transfer window opens with Collins on record he is going to bring in four top quality players in July to strengthen the midlanders promotion challenge.
