Friday 13th April 2012 (Kick-off 7.45 p.m., Terryland Park)
Having secured the first point of the season last Friday night, Mervue Utd will look to record a first win of the 2012 campaign when they make the short trip up the Dyke Road to face city rivals, SD Galway, in the first derby game of new season and the final game of series one of the Airtricity First Division.
Manager Johnny Glynn was delighted to end a run of five narrow opening game defeats with last Friday night's battling performance, which yielded a deserved first point to kick start the club's season. This week's derby game will give his squad another chance to put that elusive first win of the season on the board, but meetings between these two Galway city rivals are always close affairs no matter what level the two club's engage at.
Glynn's injury and suspension woes continue as Martin Conneely (groin), James Casserly (groin), Michael McSweeney (hamstring) and Brian Connolly (ankle) are all definitely out, while both Alan Murphy and Gary Kelly will get late fitness tests.
Captain Mike Elwood serves his final match of a three game ban, while fellow centre half, Stephen Walsh, has received a further two game additional ban for his red card against Wexford two weeks ago.
On a positive note, last season's top goalscorer Tom King returned to action in last week's game coming on for the final half hour having recovering from a long term cruciate knee injury sustained last July. Marc Ludden also made an impressive first start of the season returning from injury also and playing out of position as an emergency centre half and should continue there on Friday night.
Manager Johnny Glynn on Friday's derby game "It's a big game for both sides and derby games between us have always been tight close games in the past. I was very impressed with them defensively against Shamrock Rovers in the cup on Monday last, so we will have to improve again on last week's performance if we are to take something from the game, but we are looking forward to the game and have prepared well during the week".
