Junior A's Back to Winning Ways in League   20/10/2014

Mervue Utd A 4-2 St Patricks (Premier Division)

The club's Junior A team returned to winning ways in the Premier Division following a hard earned 4-2 win over a battling St Patricks side at Fahy's Field on Sunday morning as late goals from Luke Deacy and Stephen Cunningham ensured all three points.

Shane Keogh had put Ger McGrath's side in front in the opening half with an excellent free-kick but the visitors hit back to level matters before the interval to leave it 1-1 at the half time break.

A brilliant strike from outside the box from Stephen Cunningham restored the home sides lead as the winger cut in from the left before unleashing a smashing finish into the far top corner before the hour mark.

A defensive lapse allowed the visitors draw level again as the ball wasn't cleared from the box before eventually going in of the unfortunate Shane Keogh for an own goal for 2-2.

Sub Keith McHugh missed two great chances to restore Mervue's lead as both went wide of the goal, while Stephen Cunningham also missed a great chance from close range as he hit his effort straight at the visiting keeper.

The home side continued to press forward in search of a winner while also dominating possession and that pressure eventually told as Tommy Walsh headed Cunningham's delivery into the path of young Luke Deacy and he made no mistake firing into the roof of the net from close range.

Deep in injury time Stephen Cunningham doubled his tally as he ran onto a Derek McWalter pass through the middle before rounding the St Pats keeper and slotting home a fourth goal to ensure all three points.

The game also marked the return of centre back Mike Elwood to the club as he made his debut at junior level along with U-19 goalkeeper Peter Healy who was also making his junior debut for the club.

Mervue Utd: Peter Healy, Aaron Finnerty, Shane Keogh (Darvin Dowling), Mike Elwood, Eric Browne; Stephen Cunningham, Derek McWalter, Luke Deacy, Evan Browne (Dan Tuck), Tommy Walsh, Alex Lee (Keith McHugh).
