Junior A's Continue Winning Start   12/09/2014

Mervue Utd 2-0 Corrib Celtic (Premier Division)

The club’s Junior A team continued in winning form as they registered a third win in as many games in the Premier Division as they defeated Corrib Celtic 2-0 at Fahy’s Field on Tuesday evening.

Simon Walsh opened the scoring in the first half when he finished off an excellent ball from winger Alex Lee to make it 1-0 after 18 minutes. The home side should have added to that score before the break but some poor finishing ensured only a single goal lead at the break.

They did eventually doubled their lead eleven minutes after the restart when the in-form Dara Ryan, registered his fifth goal in three games, when he brilliantly looped a header over Corrib Celtic keeper Cathal Naughton from Alex Lee's perfect cross to the back post.

The visitors did have a couple of chances themselves to pull a goal back but some good goalkeeping from Mervue captain Brian O'Donoghue and some wayward shooting ensured a clean sheet for the home team.

The home team also missed a number of good chances to add to their two goals as Simon Walsh, Eoin Concannon and Dan Tuck were all off the mark with efforts in a very open game.

In the end the two goals were more than enough to ensure a perfect start to Gary O’Connor and Ger McGrath’s side title defence with three wins in three games to date.

In a rather strange fixture schedule the club’s Junior A team will face Corrib Celtic for a second time once again this Sunday morning when they travel to Annaghdown for the away fixture, kick-off 11 am.
