Juniors Off to Winning Start in League   27/08/2014

Mervue Utd 2-0 Galway Hibernians (Premier Division)

Two second half goals from Dara Ryan and Simon Walsh got the home side off to a winning start on Wednesday evening in their opening league game of the new season as they ran out 2-0 winners over Hibs at Fahy's Field.

The opening half produced a scoreless 45 minutes were the visitors had the better chances and missed a penalty after 25 minutes when Brian O'Donoghue pushed Keith Ward's spot kick onto the under side of the crossbar.

Hibs Dennis Lydon then headed a great chance wide of the mark after he was left unmarked from a free-kick into the box, while Barry Moran flashed an effort just pass the post at the other end on 37 minutes.

Mervue introduced Tommy Walsh and Dara Ryan for the start of the second half and the latter provided the opening score of the game just past the hour mark.

Hibs failed to clear a Mervue corner on 65 minutes and when the ball broke to Dara Ryan just inside the box he coolly slotted a low effort past John Cotter for 1-0.

The visitors almost levelled matters with 15 minutes remaining as Martin Coady raced onto a ball before cutting inside Tommy Walsh but fired his effort wide of O'Donoghue's far post.

The home side doubled their advantage two minutes later with the best move of the game. Barry Moran controlled ball on the half way line before slipping a pass out wide to Alex Lee who cut inside Cathal Walsh and raced towards the Hibs box before picking out Simon Walsh at the back post and he slotted home for 2-0.

A good start to the new campaign for Gary O'Connor and Ger McGrath's team as they picked up their first three points in the quest for a fifth Premier Division title in a row.
