U14's Advance to Last Eight in SFAI Cup   08/03/2014

U14 SFAI Goodson Cup Last Sixteen
Mervue Utd 7-2 Kilcornan (Limerick)

The Under 14's advanced to the quarter final of the SFAI Goodson Cup after another impressive display with a 7-2 defeat of Limerick Desmond League side, Kilcornan, in their last sixteen tie at Fahy's Field on Saturday afternoon.

Damien Brennan and Rynal Browne's young side had defeated Carlow side, New Oak Boys, in the previous round just two weeks ago scoring nine in that game and they hit another seven on Saturday afternoon as Adam Kelleher struck a hat-trick, while Aaron Connolly and Ronan Manning both scored twice.

In a very open first half the visitors had three great chances to open the scoring as the impressive Ronan Quinn was just off the mark twice while Cian Mulryan denied him on the other occasion, while Manning and Connolly also went close for the home side.

The deadlock was broken on 16 minutes as Aaron Connolly broke into the box and was hauled down by Tomas O'Connor with the centre half booked and Mervue awarded the spot kick. Ronan Manning made no mistake sending Kilcornan keeper, Kevin Walsh, the wrong way for 1-0.

Manning and Connolly went close to doubling that lead shortly after, with the latter firing just past the far post after a storming run into the box on the half hour mark.

The visitors Ronan Quinn pulled his side level three minutes later when he raced onto a ball over the top and placed a cool finish into the corner past the advancing Mulryan for 1-1.

The home side were back in front on the stroke of half time as winger Adam Kelleher registered the first of his trio racing through from the right and firing into the corner past Walsh to give his side a 2-1 interval lead.

Kelleher doubled his tally five minutes after the break when he finished Connolly's ball past Walsh for 3-1. Connolly then fired in the goal of the afternoon as he smashed a cracking effort into the top corner from outside the box for 4-1.

Quinn pulled a goal back when he raced through the middle again rounding the advancing Mulryan and rolling the ball into the empty net for 4-2.

The three goal lead was restored immediately though as Manning grabbed his second of the afternoon with an excellent run past four defenders before producing a brilliant finish into the far corner.

Kelleher bagged his hat-trick when he finishing a Colin Kelly cross from close range past an over worked Walsh and Connolly collected his second of the day when he buried Manning right wing cross past the visiting keeper at the near post to round off the scoring.

In between those final two scores Manning was very unlucky not to match Kelleher's hat trick as he saw his brilliantly struck free kick smash back of the post with Walsh beaten.

In the quarter final, Brennan and Browne's side will travel to Kildare Town who defeated St Patrick's Boys 4-0 yesterday in their last sixteen tie.
