U16 B's Capture Championship Cup   05/06/2018

GFA U16 Championship CUP

Salthill Devon B 1-3 Mervue United B

Scorers: Alex Cleary, Luke Smith & Michael Omokua

The club's under 16 B squad finished their season off with an excellent 3-1 win over Salthill Devon B in the Championship cup final at Eamonn Deacy Park on Monday evening. Mervue started off poorly and couldn’t get their passing game going in the first half. They still created some chances though and from a Dylan Rees corner the ball broke to Eoin Dunleavy hit a volley just wide. Ben Stanik and Michael Omokua went close with headers from Dylan Rees corners. Eston Laza and Dylan Rees combined to set up Luke Smith who went through only for his shot to be blocked. Jack Roche, Eoin Dunleavy and Dylan Rees combined for Luke Smith to head narrowly wide. Alamin Ayanda beat 3 players but couldn’t get a shot in. The first half ended scoreless.

Mervue totally dominated the second half with some lovely passing football. Frank Onalaja and Luke Doyle combined for Dylan Rees whose shot was brilliantly saved by the Salthill keeper. Ben Stanik and Alex Cleary combined to put Eston Laza through and the Salthill keeper made another great save. Dara Naughton and Tony Evan combined to win a free kick which was whipped in to the near post by Dylan Rees for Tony Evans who had his shot blocked for a corner. Dylan Rees took a brilliant corner for Alex Cleary to rocket a header in to the top corner. From the kick off Mervue pressed and Luke Doyle played a great through ball to Luke Smyth who hammered home the second. Salthill then scored after poor Mervue defending from the free kick. Mervue picked the pace up and some good passing from Michael Omokua saw Cian Donnellan hit a great shot which was saved by the keeper. Then great pressing by Cian Donnellan saw him win the ball and play it to Luke Smith who pulled a great ball back to Michael Omokua who passed in to the net for a great third goal. Then keeper Dean Watson pulled off a great save to keep the score at 3-1. Jack Roche then played a great ball over the top for John Ojo to run on to only for the keeper to make another great save at his feet. Luke Doyle played another great ball to Cian Donnellan whose shot was saved by the Salthill keeper. Dara Naughton and John Ojo combined to cross for Eoin Dunleavy who controlled well and shot only for the keeper to pull off another great save. Hard luck to a very sporting Salthill team and all their coaches.

A great win for this Mervue team the defence of Dean Watson, Jack Roche, Dara Naughton, Frank Onalaja (vice captain), Ben Stanik and Eston Laza only conceded a few chances in the game. The midfield of Michael Omokua (captain), Alex Cleary, Luke Doyle, Alamin Ayanda and Eoin Dunleavy both created and scored. Lastly the forward line of Dylan Rees, John Ojo, Cian Donnellan, Luke Smyth and Tony Evans played with great movement scoring and creating chances. They have come from winning 3 games last season to winning 14 this season. They have trained 93 times and beaten every team in the league including the champions. They also finished third in the league and were in contention till the second last game. Thanks to all the parents who made their sons available during and before exams all season especially those doing the exams this week. Good luck to them all in the Junior cert. Your kids are a credit to ye for their effort and commitment this season.

I would also like to thank Joe, Nugger and Meabh for their help in the club house, Nicky for all the facebook posts. Thanks also to Stephen for his help and especially to Hopper who I plagued over the last week (and season) and literally made go down to Eamonn Deacy Park three times to try and get the final played there. Yet he never complained once and had all gear and Supermacs vouchers ready for this evening. Big thanks also to Eric and Seamie who made their under 15's available all season. Also to club Chairman, Michael Shaughnessy, who has supported every team in the club this season. Big Thanks to club photographer, Robert Stanik, for all his excellent photos this season.

Lastly to my coaches Henry and Sinesa who were brilliant all season. Thanks also to our fellow coaches for all their support and whats app messages this evening and throughout the season. Finally big thanks to the players who have made Henry and I very happy (sometimes cranky) coaches this season and ecstatic coaches this evening. Apologies if I left any one out.
