The Mervue United Club Crest History

In 1985 a Juvenile Committee was set up to support the ever-growing population of young players. This committee included some of the senior committee members, Billy Carr, Mitch Grealish and Willie Henry. It was decided to take two juvenile teams to Liverpool to visit the 'Hallowed' ground of Anfield and take in a match. Prior to the trip a number of issues had to be addressed, including the design of a club crest and pendant. Billy Carr requested Willie Henry to create an appropriate design to represent the club. This resulted in the following design and the reasons for the various sections on the crest are as follows. The first crest contained an oak tree set on a chevron, under which a football was centrally placed. The chevron represented and was copied from the Joyce family coat of arms, one of the famous Tribes of Galway. A branch of this family had their home at Mervue House (Royal Tara) and was owner of the surrounding area. A huge forest of oak trees covered the area at the time. It was with this in mind that the oak tree was selected for the crest, plus the fact that oak represents strength. A football was set centrally under the chevron for obvious reasons. Sheila Gallagher of Woodquay produced the crest on a pendant and had them ready on St. Patrick's Day 1986, just prior to the Liverpool trip getting under way. Following the match between Oxford and Liverpool, (Liverpool won), the Mervue United juvenile teams and committee members were invited on a tour of the grounds and facilities at Anfield. The tour finished in the trophy room where Willie Henry representing Mervue United AFC presented the first club pendant to Ken Myers, Commercial Manager of Liverpool FC. He also had the honour of presenting a Galway Crystal Plate engraved with the names of both clubs. When the first supply of two hundred pendants was exhausted, Bryan Finnerty redesigned the crest to its present form, using images from the old design and adding the year in which the club was founded, 1960.
